"Strike a Balance Between Attracting More Tourists" & Thai National Security?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are talking about the Visa Exemption, I should say the thumbnail and the title of the video suggests, we are talking about Visa Exemption, the possibility that it may be curtailed. It was my understanding they were going to curtail it, now it looks like they are discussing it, remains to be seen.
That being said, and by the way, for all the trolls out there, I am not making a fortune doing visa exemption extensions, okay. That was never my intention in reporting on the possibility they may curtail back 60 days to 30. I have talked about it a lot. It tends to be the policy, in fact it doesn't tend to be, it is the trend that they are always more relaxed during high season and then they tighten up during low season. I wasn't particularly surprised at the thought that we could go from 60 to 30 days. But am I somehow conspiring to influence that we go back to 30 days so I can make some fortune off of extending Exemption Stamps? No, we don't make our money that way. Quite frankly, the whole exemption thing is something I talk about, because frankly we can talk promotionally but I don't make any cases off of that kind of work. So I don't know what you think I'm doing up here, other than just trying to give you the information.
That said, quoting directly, again Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the title: 'No decision yet' on cutting Thai visa-free period. Quoting directly: "According to the Thai Travel Agents Association, the longest stay for most tourists visiting the Kingdom is no more than 21 days. Earlier this month, authorities agreed in principle to consider shortening the visa-free period to help curb the exploitation of the visa exemption. Mr. Nikorndej said the Foreign Affairs Ministry aims to strike a balance between attracting more tourists and ensuring national security. Given the evolving context and circumstances, he said the Ministry needs to review existing measures from time to time, in terms of the law and the views of certain agencies. He said the effectiveness of the extended visa-free scheme is being reviewed, adding that suggestions would be submitted to a visa policy committee before being proposed to the cabinet."
So basically, the response there was we are going to make our own decisions regarding Thai Immigration Policy, regardless of what many people say. That being said, they are going to look at it and as we have seen, it evolves over time, they may determine no changes necessary, they may determine to change it. The fact is they are looking at it. That's pretty big news in the Immigration world and we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
