Thai O Retirement Visa Extension: Re-Entry Permits?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai O Retirement Visas. I want to be very clear, we are talking about Thai O Retirement Visas, not O-A Retirement Visas, they operate a little bit differently; what we are talking about here is Thai O Retirement Visas. For those who are looking to come to Thailand and retire, the O Retirement Visa is oftentimes and in many cases, the most optimal methodology in which to do that. Now the thing to take away from this video and to understand is, an extension, just getting an extension in Thailand is one thing, so if you just want to stay in Thailand you get your Visa extended. We have discussed that at length in many other videos; there are links up in the description below that discuss that at length. We do a lot of Visa Extensions here in Thailand, a lot of Retirement Visa extensions both O-A and O, primarily O these days but some O-As. Yeah, that's just what you have got to do.

Now extension status does not mean you can come and go from the Kingdom and preserve that status. You need to get a Re-Entry Permit, either a single entry Re-Entry Permit or a multiple entry Re-Entry Permit depending on your travel plans to maintain or preserve your extension status while you are abroad. Failure to get a re-entry permit on O Retirement Visa status could result in when you leave the country, your Visa status is effectively extinguished. It is dead at that moment if you will.

So the thing to take away from this video is I think it is prudent to always seek a Re-Entry Permit. I know folks out there who are perfectly happy to not do it unless they need it. It has been my experience though that oftentimes you think you are not going to need it and then some personal emergency, it's usually a personal emergency, sometimes a work emergency arises where you have got to leave quickly and then it has been my experience, it is better to already have that Re-Entry Permit in one's Visa rather than having to scramble around and try to dig one up sort of on the fly while one is trying to leave the Kingdom quickly in order to deal with something abroad.
