Thai Senate Seeks "Crackdown" by Immigration to Protect Local Businesses?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing a crackdown? The Senate is urging a crackdown here in Thailand with regard to foreign businesses? Let's get into it. Quoting directly from an article in the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Thai Government urged to act on foreign businesses and tourism. Quoting directly: "The Senate is urging the Government to crackdown on tourism businesses run by local proxies of foreign citizens in an effort to protect local business against unfair competition."

And for those foreigners who say: "oh well Thailand has sort of rigged their game and they are very insulated and protectionist", yeah, they are. They are protecting their local labour market. Quoting further: "To deal with the problem, the Ministry will work with the Department of Tourism, the Department of Business Development, the Department of Special Investigation..." I can't stress enough, that's like the equivalent of like the FBI, that's analogous to like the FBI or something like that in Thailand. "..the Tourism Police Bureau (TBP) and the Immigration Bureau..." - that's notable too, Immigration. Again, this is a focus on foreign businesses, foreign nationals coming to Thailand, operating illegally and it could have Immigration ramifications. Most notably you could end up getting deported, possibly blacklisted. Quoting further: "…to investigate foreign businesses suspected of using local nominees to operate." Again, I can't stress this enough. Look, Thailand has restricted occupations; it has restricted business sectors that are restricted from foreign nationals. Tourism for example is one we have discussed in other videos; things involving property, certain professions, law, accounting. There are other issues, again certain types of manual labour: hairdresser for example. A lot of folks seemingly in some of the resort places, foreigners come here and want to get into the barber trade and it's like no, that's clearly restricted to Thai nationals; that's not going to change anytime soon.

Again, the point I am trying to make is it sort of spans a spectrum; it is not just one sector. There are various restricted occupations throughout the entirety of the Thai Economy and if you take nothing else away from this video, understand, the Thais are very serious about enforcing this stuff. They are not unaware of the economic situation around the world; they need to go ahead and protect the labour market for their own people, and they are going to be assiduous in a law enforcement capacity in protecting their own people's labour market. So again, I don't think that this is the last we are going to hear of Thai Authorities in the Kingdom going after folks who circumvent Thai Law in order to allow foreign nationals to basically operate in such a way that's illegal here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
