Thai Visa Extension and Passport Expiration?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai Visa Extensions as well as expiration of passports. I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: British expats face delays in obtaining replacement passports. Quoting directly: "A spokeswoman for Thai Immigration advised Brits to apply for replacement visas early, pointing out that visas cannot be extended beyond the passport validity and entry to Thailand requires a minimum of 6 months still remaining before expiry."
So to the point in this video, if you want to extend your Thai Visa, there actually was a time and this has changed since we have had this channel. We did a video on this in the past wherein there was a policy change. It used to be if your passport was expiring so for example let’s say if you have eight months left on your passport, you need to extend your Thai Business Visa, you go ahead and extend that, you get a one year extension. Prior to the policy change some years ago, that one year extension would be stamped into your passport and that one year extension would operate past the expiration of the passport. So if the passport expired in 8 months but the Visa expired in 12, there was this weird four month period that was actually valid on a stamp in the passport even though the underlying passport had expired. That rule was later changed. Now the rule is Thai Immigration will only extend up to the expiration date of the passport itself. They will not, even if you were otherwise entitled to for example a 12-month extension, if your passport expires in 8, they are only going to extend the Visa up to the 8-month mark.
