Thai Visas On Arrival Suspended Until September?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Visas on Arrival. It appears and we have seen this in various sources, but the first source I found I am going to quote here momentarily, it appears that Visas on Arrival are effectively suspended for at least the time being.

A recent article from the Pattaya Mail that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Overseas Thai Embassies Update Visa Guidance for Foreigners. Quoting directly: "Another cancellation is the Visa on Arrival which has been suspended until September 30th. This Visa covers 18 countries, China and India being the main sources, who are entitled to a stay of 14 days plus 7 days extension in pre COVID times on payment of 2,000 Baht on arrival in Thailand. Instead they have been told to apply for visas in their own country. There are only four European countries included in the Visa on Arrival arrangement; Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta and Romania.

So apparently, the so-called Visa on Arrival program is suspended, again as noted in this article until September 30th. Now whether or not it will continue to be suspended after that remains to be seen so presumably let's presume it is going to stop being suspended on September 30th but things could change in the intervening months. I think it is interesting because Visas on Arrival are pretty frequently used. A number of the tourists that come to Thailand use Visas on Arrival. These should not be confused with Visa Exemptions. Visa Exemption stamps, you just get on a plane, you come to Thailand and you get stamped in under normal times for 30 days. Presently it has been temporarily at least, extended to 45 days to allow for the quarantine period.

Now they are two different things. The Visa on Arrival is an actual Visa, you pay for it on arriving. It is actually adjudicated. They put a sticker in your passport. A Visa Exemption is just somebody comes in from certain countries and they just stamp you in with a stamp at the Immigration checkpoint. You don't actually go through the extra step of getting the actual Visa issued. At least for now these are not going to be possible to obtain for those folks. Those folks are going to have to go ahead and obtain a Visa at the Embassy or Consulate of their choice before coming into Thailand.
