Thai Work Permits And Tax ID Numbers

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Work Permits and Tax ID numbers. The issue of taxes in Thailand and Thai Tax Policy has been on the lips of many expats here recently. In fact most expats that I meet sort of out and about will just tell me straight up, within minutes of meeting me, usually when I meet expats, they end up wanting to talk about visas; it is what it is. Visas are a big topic amongst expats, it's just something you end up talking about pretty frequently.

Here recently though, these discussions on changes to Thai Tax Policy seems to be something that is of great concern to the Foreign Community here in Thailand. But that said, those who have been maintaining your status here in Thailand in Business Visa and Work Permit status, again people like me, the first 11 years I was here I was in Business Visa and Work Permit status; I became Thai roughly five years ago so I don't have to deal with that anymore. But yeah this notion of "it is a big deal having to have a Tax ID number", to folks that have been living and working here it's kind of like a "where's the beef" kind of question. Like what are you talking about? This is something we have had to deal with all the time. Now again new tax protocols may have an effect on retirees and Thailand but those who have been maintaining Work Permits over the course of their tenure here in the Kingdom, you have always had to have a Tax ID number. It's part and parcel, it is a prerequisite to even getting a Work Permit in Thailand is to have a Tax ID number.

So again this whole new change in policy with regard to taxes is really not going to have a major impact on those with a Work Permit here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
