Thailand Border Run Update: Tak Border Checkpoint Currently Closed?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this videos just, we are discussing Border Runs. For those who are unaware, oftentimes we discuss Border Runs not to be confused with what I call Visa Runs. I know this is kind of my own vernacular and I have had some people criticize me for being overly semantic. I don't think it is being semantic, I think they are fundamentally two different things: there is crossing a border simply to sort of reset one's lawful status in a given country. For example here in Thailand usually it is a 30-day stamp most people can enter Thailand on; right now. In order to sort of encourage tourism we are still on a 45-day stamp when coming into Thailand and then it is possible to go to a border, hop out to another country for example Cambodia, as we are going to discuss here Myanmar, maybe Laos, Malaysia for example just along the border of Thailand, the physical border of Thailand, cross a border checkpoint, be stamped out of Thailand, be stamped into the counterparty country, stamped back out of that country, stamped back into Thailand and boom, in this case presumably you have got another 45 days of lawful status here in Thailand. So Border Runs are a frequent thing, they were far more frequent prior to the lockdowns but now that we are sort of getting back into the swing of things we are seeing more Border Runs as we have discussed on this channel frequently.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Bangkok Post, bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: Tak border crossing shut after Myanmar clash. Quoting directly: "Thai Authorities on Saturday temporarily closed a border checkpoint between Mae Sort District of Tak province and Myawaddy in Myanmar, following clashes between Myanmar military and opponents of the junta. The closure has affected many time foreign travellers planning to visit Myanmar. Thai Nationals who had cross earlier in the day were allowed to reenter but they are barred from returning."

So this is pretty big news for those who have to frequently use that border for whatever reason. I am sure there are foreigners up there that may use it on a frequent basis for doing their Border Runs; maybe they are going to have to use Laos now or they are going to have to find some other solution if Border Running is something that they do on a frequent basis. But also notice, that Thai nationals are restricted from traversing the Border as well so this isn't just something that is being restricted only for foreigners. This border is a hard close to the best of our understanding as of the time of this video and we will certainly keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
