There Is a Difference Between Thai Visas and Visa Extensions

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well we are discussing the difference between Thai Visas and Visa Extensions. Now I did a video here recently about multi-entry Thai Visas, multiple-entry Thai Visas, and unfortunately, I got just a wave, one particular troll, just saying all kinds of outlandish and quite frankly untrue things - especially about me - but also about visas, the Visa system, how this stuff works. Unfortunately, I don't know, I guess it's just the nature of YouTube.

In any event, this comes up a lot when I am talking about multi-entry visas because people don't really understand the multiple-entry visa itself; that is not the thrust of this video. I am making another video contemporaneously with this one, where I do discuss multiple-entry visas specifically again and just sort of go through exactly what we are talking about on that.

But the point of this video is to understand, there is a difference between a Visa issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs outside of Thailand, that's via an Embassy or Consulate. Now it may be an e-visa now - we are seeing more and more that so-called “Visa Runs” as I call them where the actual act of going abroad in order to seek a Visa and actually physically go to an Embassy is happening less and less because people are able to do that online - that is different from a Border Run which is just an exercise in crossing the border, crossing back in, and the act of crossing the border causes one to end their prior lawful status and restart new status. Again difference between Visa Run and Border Run. But that said, the point of this video and what to understand here is there is a difference between a Visa issued by an Embassy abroad versus a Visa Extension issued by Thai Immigration here in country. Now you could also have a Visa conversion here in country where for example you go from a Tourist Visa to for example a Thai Retirement Visa and then have your Thai Retirement Visa extended therefrom.

But the thing to understand is there is a difference between these two things, and the difference is, a Visa issued abroad you will be stamped in by Thai Immigration at a Port of Entry here for whatever the duration is appropriate based on the Visa that you got from abroad. That is not the same thing as having one's passport stamped with an extension of Visa status within the Kingdom; these are two different things. I think it is important to point this out because I have seen a lot of misnomers and quite frankly a lot of people acting very hostilely in the comment sections talking about this, talking about as if they know exactly what they are talking about; frankly they are often not talking about the reality, but there is a difference between a Visa issued abroad, versus a Visa Extension issued here in Thailand.
