"Updates on Policy and Operational Developments" from Thai MFA?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and meetings that they are currently having as of even the time of this video regarding developments in their operations and their policies.

I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the Pattaya Mail, that is pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Thailand urges stronger Consular support for citizens abroad amid global uncertainty. Quoting directly: "Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow delivered policy remarks to Consular Officials at the 2026 Global Consular Officers Seminar in Bangkok, detailing a people-centered approach to diplomacy and support for citizens abroad." Yeah FYI, when I saw similar articles talking about this in the Bangkok Post, they were talking about this ‘people-centered approach to diplomacy’ and then went on to talk about how they were going to start using AI. So what is it? Is it really going to be people-centered? I have got to be honest, I think something Thais generally are selling themselves short on is that their in-person assistance is what helps. It's actually what makes the system work. Trying to like hook in AI into all of this, I'm not sure that that's the best idea, and I'm not real sure that it's not just going to lead to a lot of bad outcomes and inefficiencies, and frankly not much getting done. I find it interesting that everybody takes this end of history approach to AI like we have gotten here and now it's just done. It's another tool. It's like Excel spreadsheets, or the internet. Yes, it's probably going to change things just like both of those things did, but it's not the end all be all. It's not like we no longer have to do things, and deal with each other and interact. If we're really going to do people-centered diplomacy, maybe let's have people interact, rather than computers. Just one man's opinion.

That said, quoting further: "People-centered approach to diplomacy and support for citizens abroad. The address made clear the need to step up support for Thai nationals overseas amid global uncertainty including tensions in the Middle East." Yeah, good point on that; I couldn't agree more. Quoting further: "The Seminar organized by the Department of Consular Affairs from March 24 to 27 provides updates on policy and operational developments while allowing officials to exchange experiences and address challenges. Discussions are expected to improve efficiency and strengthen Consular services for Thai nationals worldwide."

Well that would be good. I don't think anybody is arguing that. It is interesting, it's good to see. I'm glad to see that they do have a seminar where everybody sort of gets together, gets on the same page. And yeah, it is helpful when Thais are abroad that they can reach out to their Embassy or Consulate and receive services if and when necessary. Again, my only real criticism or maybe it's not even criticism, but just point to ponder, is if Thailand is going to really pursue people-centered diplomacy, perhaps we should do so away from AI. I'm not saying AI can't be useful, but again this notion that it's going to like save everything and it operates in lieu of the way we have traditionally done things, I don't know that that is the best approach to take.

That said, it remains to be seen how all this plays out, so we will certainly be keeping you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
