Usage of Thai Companies for "Digital Nomads"?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Thai Companies and their usage for Digital Nomads here in the region or specifically here in the Kingdom. For those who follow this channel rather regularly, there has been a lot of talk over the past few years about things like the Smart Visa or the Long-Term Residence Visa which is a misnomer; the so called LTR, Long Term Residence Visa, does not actually confer residence in Thailand. Why they call it that is beyond me but it is not a Residence Visa. Meanwhile, how can, people have probably seen my videos and they say "well you talk about the Smart Visa or the LTR and you say it is not really all that feasible for most folks," and frankly it isn’t, it is a narrow category that is used by narrow subset of people so what options are out there? The answer to that question is the standard option that has always been out there, Thai Corporation.
If you are a Digital Nomad and you have an online business out there, it is very possible to utilize a Thai Corporate structure as a vehicle for maintaining that business in an ongoing capacity, maintain cash flow through that entity and then use that entity as a mechanism for maintaining long term Business Visa and Work Permit status. So the thing to take away from this video and to understand is, yes, the Digital Nomad probably, in fact I would say the vast majority of Digital Nomads will probably benefit more from setting up a Thai Company in the long term and utilizing that Company in order to maintain lawful status. Most important point here is such a setup can put someone on the path for Permanent Residence in Thailand, real Permanent Residence in Thailand, Thai Permanent Residence, not Long-Term residency which actually isn't Residence, but actual Thai PR. And at the same time, sort of part and parcel with that, one could also be on the path to Thai citizenship long-term through that mechanism as well.
The thing to understand and the thing to take away from this video is oftentimes, not only the most cost-effective way of gaining PR, real PR in the long term but also the traditional way of ever doing it and the only way that I am aware of as of the time of this video of just sort of a single person coming in on their own and putting themselves on path for Thai PR is going to be via the mechanism of setting up a Thai Company, maintaining one's Work Permit and Business Visa in a genuine business enterprise for the period of time required in order to be eligible to file for Permanent Residence and then maintain one's status while Permanent Residence is being adjudicated. So generally speaking you're looking at a couple, three or four years before this is going to be possible but compare that cost wise and efficiency wise with many and pretty much all of the alternatives and in my opinion you are not going to do much better than that mechanism especially in sort of the Digital Nomad space. I know folks that work online and things don't love the term Digital Nomad; there are many out there that kind of hate that term but long story short, whatever you want to call it, folks working remotely however you want to look at it, often times a Thai Corporate structure is going to be the most effective way of dealing with that issue.
