What Happened to Thai Honorary Consulates?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Honorary Consulates for Thailand. I get this question about once a month it seems like. A lot of old school expats that have been around; not their first rodeo dealing with their visa to Thailand, they ask me, "What happened to Honorary Consulates?" For those who are unaware, there was a time where it was possible, in fact it was relatively straightforward for folks to be able to apply for a Thai Visa through an Honorary Consulate as opposed to a Thai Embassy or a Thai Consulate General.

Those days are effectively gone. There are very few Honorary Consulates although there are some depending on the jurisdiction but there are very few Honorary Consulates. Most notably for example, like the UK and the US, there was a time I know Hull was a very popular Honorary Consulate, in the US there were a number of Honoraries in Texas and Florida especially that seemed to have a lot of people use them. Out on the West Coast, Portland was used a lot. We used to process a lot of cases out of Portland and Honolulu. Those Consulates, the Honoraries seem to have been kind of effectively phased out. While they are still there, as far as Visa processing at least presently, definitely under this current sort of COVID regime, we are definitely seeing everything processing through Embassies or Consulates-General. These are actual posts which are staffed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs personnel from Thailand as opposed to Honorary Consulates with may be a local national who is just operating there and representing the Kingdom in that particular location.

So, there was a time where we saw a lot of Thai Visas processed through those Honoraries. These days definitely not as many. I hesitate to ever speculate but I would doubt highly that we would see a lot of Visa activity occurring out of those in the relatively near future
