Will New Foreigners Set Up Businesses in Thailand?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video is just, we are discussing new foreigners and whether or not they will be setting up businesses here in Thailand. We have been discussing the issue of new foreigners coming into Thailand. We are seeing the demography frankly of expat Thailand shifting greatly. In the past, it was primarily all the folks - primarily males and primarily Western males - that we would see as expats here in Thailand. The demography is shifting substantially. I'm seeing a lot of foreign women now; I'm seeing also a lot of younger guys and while at one time it was about 80/20, 80% retirees I would argue out here, about 20% sort of working younger expats, I think that those numbers are going to go more and more toward 50/50 as time goes on. Now it's not going to be instantaneous, it's not going to be overnight, but I do think we're basically seeing a shift.
The question posed by this video is "Will these new foreigners be setting up businesses in Thailand?" I expect that will probably depend on the circumstances in a given foreigner's case most notably, whether or not they want to do business in Thailand. Some of these new visas, the LTR, the Destination Thailand Visa for example, they are providing a platform for folks to remain lawfully in Thailand, currently in temporary increments, and I think it's wise to presume that the Destination Thailand Visa, at least this as of the time of this video, it is not going to be necessarily a “permanent” type of visa for living in Thailand. As I've discussed in many other videos, Immigration is going to be the one that makes the determinations on those. Notwithstanding the hyperbole of the PR blitz maintained by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the Destination Thailand Visa, Immigration has been notably silent, in fact the silence is deafening, regarding their commentary on the Destination Thailand Visa, they're going to be the ones to decide who gets to remain legally in Thailand utilizing that visa scheme and for how long. That remains to be seen.
That being said, as far as those foreigners who want to come to Thailand and actually work in Thailand and set up a business here in the Kingdom, you're going to need to go ahead and set up a company and go ahead and deal with things like work authorization and Business Visa status. But for those folks who are just kind of passing through, no I don't see why a company would be overly necessary under those circumstances.
