Yellow House Books Demanded in the Context of Thai Banking?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Yellow House books and the interaction between them and Banking in Thailand. I thought of making this video after reading a recent email from a viewer, quoting directly: "Dear Sir, I watch your content and like the information provided. I stay in E-san, Thailand and just applied for my renewal. This year my bank, Bangkok Bank, wanted to see my Yellow book, stated it was their new rule and luckily I had one."
Yeah, we talked about this in a prior video, and I think it's worth pointing out again, that it looks like more and more, especially the provincial banks, not in the major cities, the major sort of farang intensive if you will, foreigner intensive areas: Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket, Samui. Again E-san, perfect example, sort of out in if you will the hinterland, it seems like provincial banks are now more and more saying, "hey the foreigners that are banking with us, we want to see a Yellow House Book."
I did videos on this in the past. It's a pretty onerous requirement. I totally get it; I can completely understand foreigners being frustrated by this. If they bank with a bank for a particularly long time, and then out of nowhere they say, "oh now you have got to go jump through a bunch of hoops to get a Yellow House Book", because let's be clear and anybody that has ever been through the process of getting a Yellow House Book, it's not like walking over hot coals, but it's not the easiest thing in the world either. I remember getting mine years ago at a time when they didn't even really like to do it and it was sort of pre-internet where all this information was disseminated and everybody sort of knew it was possible, they kind of went out of their way to sort of stifle you from being able to get it; I ultimately did it but it took a long time. Anybody that has ever gone through the Yellow House with the process will know it's kind of an onerous thing. And for the banks to now be requiring this, it really begs the question as to why. I don't get any of it and I think a lot of it is this Orwellian, OECD undue foreign influence stuff being brought to bear in Thailand. I think it's good for anybody, least of all the foreigners who just want to live and do their banking here especially up country.
That said, this appears to be something that we are going to be dealing with, with regard to banking especially in the provinces moving forward, and we will certainly be keeping people updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
