Contrasting Thai & US Immigration: Work Authorization With Permanent Residence

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Permanent Residence in the context of basically both the United States and Thailand; we are kind of contrasting the differences between the two statuses.

So Permanent Residence in the United States or so-called Green Card status, once it is approved, that person is effectively in every way that counts are kind of effectively a US citizen minus the ability to vote. That's the big one, those folks are not able to deal with. Now as we have discussed, if you go abroad for long period of time as an American Permanent Resident, Lawful Permanent Resident, you could raise the presumption of abandonment of residence. That does not occur for US citizens; there are a number of other things that do not apply to US citizens that do apply to PR, to people that have Permanent Residence.

But work authorization, or the way that work authorization is dealt with in an American context is very different than the way that Work Authorization is dealt with in a Thai context. The long story short is those who enter the United States with Lawful Permanent Residence, their Work Authorization is inherent to their status. Permanent Residents in Thailand don't necessarily have inherent Work Authorization, they still may need to go ahead and obtain a Work Permit; again circumstances depending they may still need to obtain a Work Permit.

So the thing to take away from this video is that is a major difference between Thai PR when you are comparing it with American Permanent Residence is there is no inherent work authorization associated with Permanent Residence here in the Kingdom of Thailand.
