Has K-1 Visa Processing Changed Under the Second Trump Administration?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing K-1 Fiancé Visas. For those who are unaware, yes there is a Visa that is usable to bring fiancé(e)s - in this case we are primarily talking about Thai fiancé(e)s as we process a lot of cases through the US Embassy here in Bangkok. We primarily deal with a lot of fiancé(e)s of American citizens who happen to be Thai, so that's kind of where our perspective is at.
Now that said, the question posed in this video, because I have gotten a few emails on this, the question is has the K-1 process overall changed since Trump took office. Well look let's be clear here, he has been in office for about now what, a little less than 2 weeks. That said, I haven't seen anything fundamentally change with regard to the K-1 Visa process. Still early.
There are certain other aspects of the US immigration process that are changing pretty fundamentally. It's my understanding that processing of Green Cards in an adjustment context for K-1s - so adjusting from Fiancé Visa to Green Card status in the United States, may be taking a little longer but that isn't the visa process for fiancé(e)s per se. We did see Trump sort of try to de-prioritize - or I should say his Administration - in the last Administration sort of de-prioritize K-1s; that started occurring as we were going into COVID. Again, I'm hopeful and I think I have some basis for this, that Trump will not be so hard on Family Immigration, especially legal Family Immigration where people who are waiting in line half a world away to get into the United States; his priority obviously is the illegal immigration coming over the border. And again, some of this chain migration stuff looks like it might not be quite the priority it once was. I'm hopeful of that because I think it's a misplaced priority frankly. I think legal family of Americans should receive some level of preferential treatment within the Immigration System, especially above illegals.
So that being said, and in answer to the overall question posed in the title of the video 'has anything really changed?' No not yet with respect to what we are seeing in terms of the Visa process. That said, again it's early days so I suspect it's possible we could see changes, and we will certainly be keeping people updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
