How Long to Renew a US Passport in Thailand?

Transcript of the above video:

The question posed in this video is how long does it take to get a US passport renewed? Specifically I am going to do this from the standpoint of hearing Thailand. I am going to presume some of this analysis may be pertinent and relevant and may apply in other jurisdictions but I am not going to go out on limb and say it will. Different Embassies, different Consulates have different protocols that they follow and they also have different on the ground issues that they have to deal with. So a Consulate for example even as close by as say the US Embassy down in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore or something, they may have different protocols and this analysis may not apply to them but I am going to do this from kind of a broad standpoint but bear in mind, this is somebody who is talking and who is taking anecdotal evidence from folks who have dealt with this here in Thailand.

I had a couple of clients over the past couple of weeks need a new US Passport issued and in most cases, if you are dealing with a renewal, now this is very different than what is called a CRBA or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and then a new passport issues often times on a child of an American, totally different topic, that's not what we are talking about in this video. We are just talking about an American; they travelled here to Thailand; they have been living here, they are just here and they want to go ahead and renew their passport. How long is that going to take? First thing to understand is this is basically going to be done kind of remotely, it can be done sort of online, fill everything out; that are instructions, you fill everything out, put your money in, usually you get a cashier's check and then send everything off to the Embassy, specifically American Citizen Services and go ahead and deal with them processing a new passport. Then oftentimes they can mail it to you. You may have to go in, presently I think some folks have to go in, but I don't think everybody does. It is my understanding, off the top of my head not everybody necessarily has to go into the Embassy to renew their passport. Something to keep in mind, those who already have a US Tourist Visa can oftentimes renew entirely remotely.

The point of this video though is how long does it take? I have had a couple of clients tell me in the past couple of weeks "hey it's just a hair under six weeks to go ahead and actually get that US passport issued." So presently based on anecdotal evidence from multiple sources I have talked to personally here in Thailand, they have told me "yeah it is a little over a month, a little under six weeks is about the time frame it is going to take to get a US passport renewed here in the Kingdom of Thailand".
