Immigration "Overstay Fines" Discontinued in the USA

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests we are discussing so-called "overstay fines" for those who are illegally present in the United States.

I am taking a term we use in a Thai context, so-called “overstay” fines, folks that are in Thailand or in this case in the United States and they are no longer in status. The prior Administration set up a system whereby those folks could be fined. A recent announcement from Department of Homeland Security, that is dhs.gov, and the announcement is titled: DHS Announces Rescission of Civil Penalties for Failure to Depart. Quoting directly: "Today, at the direction of the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas, US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement ICE, rescinded two delegation orders related to the collection of civil financial penalties for non-citizens who fail to depart the US stating they run counter to the agencies best interest’ and I quote within this statement: "There is no indication that these penalties promoted compliance with non-citizens' departure obligations, said Secretary Mayorkas. We can enforce our Immigration Laws without resorting to ineffective and unnecessary punitive measures."

So that is where it is at. It looks like yeah as I stated there was something akin to an overstay fine being imposed under the prior Administration; that has been rescinded. It now appears that moving forward, folks that are in the United States and are out of status are not going to be subjected to the civil fines.
