Lost Green Card in Thailand, What Can the Embassy Do?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing, well we are discussing the situation where you have got somebody in Thailand, they have a Green Card, they lose it and what can you do, because that's their Travel Document. How do they get on a plane to go back to America because oftentimes the airlines won't let you board if you don't have a valid Travel Document. So how do you deal with that situation?
Well, it depends on the underlying facts. Depending on the facts in the given case, in some scenarios it may be optimal to utilize what's called an SB-1 Returning Resident Visa - I have made another video contemporaneously with this one where I discuss that particular Visa category in greater detail. Meanwhile, another option might be what is called the Travel Document. You can get basically a boarding foil which will allow you to board a plane to return to the United States. Again, it depends on the underlying facts in the given case. Also understand, the Embassy when it comes to lost Green Cards and especially the Returning Resident Visa, the Embassy, I am not saying they are unfamiliar, but it is not a routine matter; it's not something they deal with just every single day. So, getting a response or sort of getting the matter processed through the bureaucracy if you will, may take a little extra knowledge, a little extra institutional knowledge to sort of push that along.
That being said, understanding, or I should say keeping that in mind, you need to understand that yeah it may be possible to return fairly quickly after losing a Green Card but the sooner you get on top of getting it rectified at the Embassy, the sooner you are going to be able to get back to the United States and get a new one. If you leave it for too long and you are out here and you have no Travel Document and you think that, "well it is still valid technically, I can get a new one”, whatever, that's not a good idea. This is one of those things that is better to get this thing sorted out sooner rather than later.
