"Sugar Daddies", Homeland Security, and Legal Grounds of Inadmissibility?
Transcript of the above video:
I'll tell you, I never thought I'd ever be making a video like this where I'm using essentially the actions of an employee at the Department of Homeland Security as a teaching point regarding, well regarding grounds of inadmissibility to the United States specifically on the issue of prostitution. So never thought I would be making this video, but here we are.
I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from yahoo.com under the headline: Top Trump counterterrorism official placed on leave after ex claims she solicited funds from 'sugar daddies'. Quoting directly: "A high-ranking official at the Department of Homeland Security has been suspended following allegations that she solicited tens of thousands of dollars from "sugar daddies". A formal complaint was filed against Julia Varvaro, a 29-year-old counterterrorism official, accusing her of keeping transactional relationships that posed a security risk, The Daily Mail reported on Wednesday. "Varvaro is on administrative leave as a result of the investigation and she is no longer serving in her capacity as a Deputy Assistant Secretary at DHS," a Department Official told The Independent. She was appointed to her senior position in May 2025, shortly after earning a degree in Homeland Security from St John's University." What is that? What's a degree in Homeland Security? And by the way, Homeland Security didn't even exist prior to the George W. Bush Administration, so what has happened in the last, I don't know, couple of decades that now there's a degree that you get in this; this thing that didn't exist prior to whatever, 2002? That said, quoting further: "Varvaro has attended several MAGA events, and has been photographed with President Donald Trump. The complaint filed with the DHS Inspector General, was submitted by an executive identified as "Robert B," who said he has spent approximately $40,000 on Varvaro during the course of their 3-month relationship after they had met on Hinge. Robert claimed in his complaint that Varvaro had created a profile on the Sugar Daddy site Seeking, on which she offered "seductive sophistication." Quote: "I did not want a sugar daddy/prostitution relationship after spending $30,000-40,000 for vacations, Cartier jewelry, expensive handbags, and various shopping trips," he wrote. Quote: "She told me she does not have college debt because her sugar daddies paid for her college education," he continued, according to the Daily Mail. "I believe that she is under financial stress and that her actions pose a security risk." Varvaro though insisted she did not have an account on Seeking and maintained that she has done nothing improper. Quote: "I didn't know it was bad to go on vacation with your boyfriend," she told the Daily Mail. "We were together in an exclusive relationship. We went on vacations. I don't know what's the problem with that." Quoting further: "Mark Polymeropoulos" - man I think Thai nam sakuls, Thai surnames are hard - "Mark Polymeropoulos" - I think that's right - "a former CIA official said he found the allegations disconcerting. "Allegations of a sugar daddy relationship and unreported income from that relationship are serious issues for DHS security personnel that need to be resolved. I would be curious to see what kind of vetting was done..."
So again, and these remain allegations, but there seems to be something going on here. I guess they're investigating it. The purpose of this video is to bring up the fact that as we have discussed in many other videos, it is a legal ground of inadmissibility to engage - within 10 years of application for any visa to the United States - to engage in any type of prostitution. Now this has been, it's one of these things where the technology has changed the landscape so to speak of society to the point that what was once very clear, very clear-cut incidences of behaviour that amounted to prostitution. Now these things are sort of nebulous, and I don't know what this woman did or did not do, actually did or did not do, and I think that again everybody is innocent until proven guilty and at the end of the day, she should be accorded fair due process and all that good stuff. But let's presume, hypothetically for a moment, that the allegations here are true. It is disconcerting. I find it a bit hypocritical on a certain level that our Immigration Law does not allow people into the United States, and somebody at the Department of Homeland Security - which is tasked specifically with dealing with things pertaining to immigration - would themselves possibly be engaging in activity that we would find inadmissible if somebody was looking for a visa to get to America. Again it brings up the nebulous nature of what all these Seeking relationships and things, and where the line is drawn between legitimate relations between people and then transactional relationships, and again getting into that it can be kind of difficult. I have dealt with what are called I-601 waivers for years with respect to, I have dealt with prostitution waivers in the past; I have dealt with waivers involving crimes involving moral turpitude which is not the same thing as a waiver pertaining to prostitution.
But long story short, again, I find it disconcerting that somebody that is tasked with Homeland Security and law on homeland security, specifically Immigration Law on homeland security, says anybody that would engage in behaviour that was tantamount to prostitution would be inadmissible to the United States. It seems to me that to have somebody who may or may not have been engaging in a similar activity is at the very least hypocritical. And meanwhile, again it calls into question whether that person should remain in that position. That said, again it remains an allegation, so as far as that goes, again she should be accorded due process. There may be further updates in the matter, and we will certainly keep people updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
