US Immigration Officials Taking a Page from the Thai Playbook?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are asking the question, are American Immigration Officials taking a page from Thailand's playbook. What are we talking about here? Well I thought of making this video after reading a recent article from the New York Post, that's newyorkpost.com, the article is titled: Trump Border Czar Tom Homan wants a hotline for Americans to report suspected criminal migrants. Quoting directly: "Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump's pick to oversee "the largest deportation operation in American history", revealed Friday that the new Administration is considering setting up a hotline that would allow Americans to report migrants suspected of committing crimes. Quote: "I want a place where American citizens can call and report," the incoming Border Czar said of the "fresh idea" being evaluated by the Trump transition team, during an interview with NBC News. Quoting further: Quote: "We need to take care of the American people," Mr. Homan added. Quote: "We need to make sure they have an outlet to help report child traffickers, forced labour traffickers. We want to give them an opportunity to be a part of the fix." So interesting, but as they note that Mr. Homan seems to have implied or said that this was a fresh idea; well in the American context it might be. That being said, here in Thailand we have had similar mechanisms in place for some time now.
I thought of making this video further after reading a recent article, well it's actually not that recent; it came from September 12, 2023, I should say. The article is titled: Phuket Immigration calls for people to report bad foreigners. I kind of wonder how much US Immigration specifically Mr. Homan is looking around the world to various allies of the United States to see some of the things that they are doing in order to combat illegal immigration. And looking over here in Thailand - which has a pretty sophisticated immigration apparatus - they found this. Quoting further: "The launch of the new channels for reporting came through an announcement posted online last Saturday, (Sept 9), one day after Phuket Immigration Chief Col Thanet Sukchai joined Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Sermphan Sirikiong at a press conference to address rising concerns of criminality among new arrivals of Russian nationals to the island." So apparently, a year ago, it seemed to be targeted at Russians. Quoting further: "People were advised to report any incidents of possible lawbreaking involving foreigners via the Traffy Fondue app..." So they actually created an app for Thais to do this and as we discussed in prior videos, even going back to 2023, that was being used with some frequency. Quoting further: "...an option that has been available for many months, though only last month was an English-language form made available through the official website." So there was an English language version of that app as well and it I believe still exists now. Quoting further: "Download the Traffy Fondue app from Google Play or the app store still in Thai language only. Quoting further: "See the English language form here." And again there are links, we urge you to check out that link, go to thephuketnews.com, I should say, thephuketnews.com. Quoting further: "Alternatively, people may report law-breaking foreigners by calling the hotline 096-0365485, said the announcement which featured a photo of Phuket Immigration Inspector Pol Lt Col Rangsinan Chanphet offering a salute." So again, we have got a hotline here in Thailand that you can use by phone, there's an app as well with an English language component.
So with regard to this, I think Thailand is kind of ahead of the curve regarding these sort of hotlines to report sort of Foreigners Behaving Badly here in Thailand and now it appears US Immigration Officials look poised to go ahead and implement a similar setup in the United States. We will certainly be keeping people updated on this channel as this situation evolves.
