US Marriage Visa (K-3, CR-1, IR-1) Expiration Dates

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing expiration dates associated with US Marriage Visas. When I say US Marriage Visas, we are talking about K-3 Visas, CR-1 Visas or IR-1 Visas for the spouse of an American citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. Now most folks when they get their visa, they basically want to get on the first thing smoking and get into the United States. They want to get on the first plane and get over to America because the purpose of going through this which has become quite an arduous process of getting a Marriage Visa, they just want to go ahead and get to America.

There are some folks who for whatever reason it is not possible to immediately go and I am making this video for those folks. Be cognizant of the fact that your Visa has an expiration date and I am especially pointing this out because a lot of folks will read things on the internet about Immigrant Visas, that is the CR-1 or the IR-1 Visa, and they will say to themselves "well this Visa grants me lawful permanent residence." Yes once you get to the United States it grants you lawful permanent residence but until you are admitted to the US there is an expiration date on that travel document, on that Visa. Generally speaking you are going to have 6 months to use it although the facts of the giving case, the underlying application, may result in a lower or a less elongated expiration or validity period. Sometimes, medical exams may play into this, documentation expiring may play into the expiration date that is given on the face of the Visa. Generally again you have six months to use it but it will vary case by case.

So the reason for this video is you need to be aware of that expiration date. You need to use that Visa before it expires lest you have to start the process all over again.
