What Does the Information on a K-1 Visa Mean?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing K-1 Visas and the information contained on a K-1 Visa. We are going to go ahead and put this up on screen. This I got from the US Embassy in London's website and it is basically a mock Visa if you will.

We will go ahead and put this up. So there is information on these. Obviously it has got the place where the Visa was issued; it has got the name, the surname and the given name of the person traveling; birthdate, birthplace, nationality, marital status. Then over here for Immigrant Visas, they have got IV category; there it says IR-1, it could say K-1. For purposes of Consular Processing, K-1's are treated as an Immigrant Visa because you can have immigrant intent. Ultimately the intent with a K-1 is immigrant even though it is technically a Non-Immigrant Visa. K-1 is the category. Then up above there you will see IV case number. As we have noted in other videos on this channel, there are case numbers associated; you basically get a case number when you process through a given Embassy. That is your reference point for any correspondence when dealing with the Embassy. There is a registration number, it would be like a Visa number. They also note one's passport; the issuance date and the expiration date of the Visa. That is something to keep a good eye on; the expiration date of the Visa, because if you use it after the fact it is dead, it has effectively expired and you can't gain status to the United States. Then also they will have annotation. There is nothing noted here but depending on the situation, there might be annotations as to Legal Grounds of Inadmissibility that perhaps have been waived. We see this a lot regarding overstay waivers; we oftentimes will see it in response to certain criminal conduct, specifically crimes involving moral turpitude sometimes as well as waivers associated with prostitution, but that is what the annotation is there for.

I just wanted to go ahead and make this video. I thought that this mock Visa would allow people if they got their visa it provides some explanation. A lot is frankly self-explanatory but for example the case number, that can be useful; you may want to keep an eye on that especially if you have issues in entering the United States and you are going to want to be sure to get into the country prior to the expiration of the Visa.
