Contrasting Entry Rules for Thailand and Cambodia

Transcript of the above video:

This video is in another of our series. We are going to do a few of these comparing the Entry Rules associated with Thailand as well as other jurisdictions nearby here in Southeast Asia and this one we are discussing Cambodia.

I thought about this after reading an article in the Pattaya Mail, pattayamail.com, the article is titled: Unpopular Thailand Pass Entry Rules may End. Quoting directly: "Some neighboring countries are already introducing simplified entry procedures. Cambodia does require an ATK test taken at the airport on arrival but claims the process takes only 20 minutes. Thailand's land borders with all neighboring countries remain closed for foreign tourists for now although there are reports of some crossings at Cambodian and Laos entry points." Yeah, I have heard some of the same whisperings but I haven't found anything confirming that, so take that for what you will. "The Cambodian Government website shows no compulsory insurance" (and I am adding part of the quote), "insurance cover for tourists" (insurance is my addition) although some are required to have a bond worth US $2,000 in case they catch the disease."

So again all of this is nuanced; it is sort of a mixed bag. I have been hearing anecdotally from folks that I keep in contact with, friends, clients etc., Cambodia is quite a less onerous process to get in. Most notably again one of the big complaints, Thailand Pass; they just don't have all of these weird hoops to jump through just to get into the country. So presently, I would say on balance it may be a little bit "easier" although I don't know how you use the word "easy" in the current travel climate we are dealing with. But, I would say it is comparatively less onerous to get into Cambodia at the moment, which brings me to a point I kind of would like to make just as an opinion which is I really hope Thai policy makers really reassess overall policy. Yes, credit where credit is due. Thailand has been more accommodating than virtually any other country in the region as far as tourists especially over the course of 2021 comparatively. But that is over and now the tables are turning and we could see a situation where Thailand is placed in a less competitive situation vis a vis other countries because of the rather onerous requirements in order to enter the Kingdom.
