Could Quarantine for Tourists End by Thai New Year (Songkran)?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing quarantine here in Thailand and I wanted to quote a recent article. This was from Thai PBS World that is thaipdsworld.com. The article is titled: Vaccinated Foreigners May Be Allowed to Enter Thailand Without Quarantine.

Quoting directly: "The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is considering plans to attract foreign tourists back to Thailand. They may allow vaccinated foreigners to enter the country without the need for 14 days quarantine on arrival." Quoting further: "The Tourism and Sports Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, revealed today that the aim is to have 5 to 10 million foreign tourists enter Thailand this year starting after the Songkran Festival in mid-April or in May at the latest. He added that reaching a 10 million mark would depend on restrictions in countries like Malaysia, China and India." There is a lot more in there. I urge folks who are watching this video to go and check that out.

Long story short, a couple of things, yes I do think definitely the folks who are in charge of dealing with Tourism and Immigration do want to see tourists return sooner rather than later. Obviously there are concerns at official levels or policy executive levels regarding the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The thing to take away from this video is first of all, understand that the Tourism and Sports Ministry, obviously that is a ministerial position, a lot of policy discussion is done by those folks at a high level in the cabinet etc., but remember it is going to be Immigration and Ministry of Foreign Affairs along with likely the Public Health Ministry that makes substantive changes, as well as the CCSA which is the committee that is in charge of dealing with the response to COVID-19. All of these folks are going to be the ones who are going to be making substantive policy decisions with respect to how the Immigration apparatus will operate.

That being stated, we have done and number of videos and it looks like vaccinations will play a role in whether or not people are going to be required to quarantine at least for the foreseeable future within 2021. How exactly this plays out remains to be seen and we will be making videos on this topic keeping you updated as the situation evolves.
