If I Might Make a Suggestion Mr. Trump: How About Honorary Consulates?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we're discussing what about Honorary Consulates Mr. Trump? First of all, congratulations, great to see that you won. Looking forward to another Administration; it's going to be really interesting. That being said, I try not to get overly partisan on here, but this is one of those things where I think it's worth pointing out. Especially with you coming in and you could be, you could really stir things up. I think this could be good.
You know, we are one of the few countries in the world that doesn't have Honorary Consulates; I think we are one of like two countries, and like the other one is the North Koreans or something. I'm not sure that that's the case, but it's pretty close. Honorary Consulates could be useful. I'm not trying to sidestep the State Department; I'm not trying to say that what those folks do isn't important, it is. I have dealt with them for years. They are professional people, but they have got a lot on their plate and quite honestly there are ways that this could be, I really just think Honorary Consulates would be a good addition to what we already have. I understand the thinking of, 'we want only professional diplomatic corps, whatever', fine. I'm not talking about these people are going to be doing what DOS personnel currently are doing. Honorary Consulates mostly, in a sense they are kind of like advertising and in another sense one of their biggest functions is when citizenry in the foreign country have problems, the Honorary Consulate could be one of the first points of contact to deal with said issues, be it a police problem, or even just basic stuff. Medical issues. Maybe somebody, I am aware there is always a duty officer on duty for when an American passes away here in Thailand, so Honorary Consulates probably would not be all that involved if like an American died or something here in Thailand. But as sort of an almost like an advertising tool, I don't see why we don't do it.
Meanwhile Mr. Trump, it's free. The people that would act as Honorary Consuls, they don't do it for money. It's like the Honorary Consulates in America from Thailand for example. Those Honorary Consulate guys, they're not getting paid anything. Now sometimes there may be fees associated with, Visa fees used to be a thing for Honorary Consulates, they no longer do visas - at least in the US, Honorary Consulate don't do that anymore - but notarizations. And I get it, there's probably, how do I put it, there's money to be made; there's a revenue stream in notarizations that's going to probably the Consular Section of the US State Department because there are fees associated with those notarizations. Honorary Consulates can collect those fees too, and you'll have a record of all the notarizations made. Honoraries can do that and then hand you back the money, and it could take workload off of people within DOS who are actually getting a government salary to do something, maybe better, with their time.
I'm just saying, I just think the notion of Honorary Consulates opens up a whole lot of cool things that could be done for Americans outside of the United States.
