If Insurance is Required Why Propose a 300 Baht Thai Tourist Tax?

Transcript of the above video:

As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing the 300 Thai Baht tourism fee.

In a recent article from the Bangkok Post, that is bangkokpost.com, the article is titled: 300 Baht Fee for Foreigners Visiting Thailand. Quoting directly: “The National Tourism Policy Committee has approved the proposed guidelines for the collection of a 300 Baht tourism fee from each international visitor. The money will be used for the management of local tourist destinations and to provide insurance benefits." For those who are interested, you can go check out that article on bangkokpost.com. There is a lot more in there.

A lot of folks have sent me emails and correspondence and asked "why are they mentioning Insurance and this 300 Baht fee if those who are coming to Thailand already need COVID insurance?  If the issue is COVID why is this being levied when COVID insurance is already required? For those who are unaware, those who are coming to Thailand there are different insurance requirements depending on the underlying Visa one is to seeking to obtain but part of the requirements even with Tourist Visas is COVID Insurance so if this is a fee that is being assessed in response to COVID, the question is "why?" Well I would say I don't know, first of all. Perhaps they just want an extra buffer in case a lot of people show up to Thailand and succumb to COVID-19, I can't say for certain.

Long story short, it doesn't seem to make sense in light of other policies. As noted in other videos on this channel, this appears to not yet be official policy so we will keep you updated on this channel as the situation evolves.
