"Largest Drug Arrest Ever Recorded" on Thai Island?
Transcript of the above video:
As the title of this video suggests, we are discussing Foreigners Behaving Badly yet again, and in this case, looks to be involved in one of the biggest drug busts in the history of apparently Koh Phangan, so quoting directly from Pure Guava that is @pureguava10300 over on X: Israeli arrested in Koh Phangan's Largest Drug Bust. “Thai authorities confirmed the largest drug arrest ever recorded on Koh Phangan during security operations tied to Valentine's Day and Chinese New Year. On 14 February, Tourist Police launched an intensive Crackdown after uncovering a major drug Network selling directly to tourists via WhatsApp, with private drop locations arranged in advance. Police identified the main suspect as Chai Al-Fazi, 42, an Israeli national believed to be supplying drugs, particularly to other Israelis. Officers conducted a sting, purchasing 2 g of ketamine for 6,000 baht. The deal was arranged in Hebrew, with the drugs hidden inside a black sock at a pre-set location. After the exchange, the suspect arrived on a large motorcycle. When he produced the cash, officers revealed themselves and arrested him. Marked banknotes matched those used in the undercover buy. Further searches led to the seizure of cocaine, ketamine, MDMA powder and tablets, LSD, heroin, psilocybin mushrooms, and ecstasy pills.” I mean this is like Hunter S. Thompson’s like, I don't know; it's nuts. Quoting further: "Authorities estimate the haul at over 50 million baht." 50 million baht! I mean this was a big deal. "Police say a restaurant in Hin Kong Beach was used as a front and that the suspect is linked to a wider transnational network. He faces multiple narcotics distribution charges and illegal drug use. Investigation is ongoing with more arrests possible."
Yeah, look, this is more just almost a news function but there seems to be a lot going on down on the islands right now. There has been a lot of news down there about various different things and wow, I don't really know what to say other than one, if you get caught with that level of Narcotics in Thailand you're going to do some serious time and I expect that this person is probably poised to be doing some time incarcerated, let's just put it that way. That said, again everybody is innocent until proven guilty here in Thailand, so it remains to be seen with regard to the adjudication on that. As we've discussed in other videos, presuming this person serves their time and the Court is satisfied that they have done their sentence whatever that may ultimately be, you can also presume that this person will probably be deported and blacklisted and not be able to return to Thailand.
That said, this uptick in a lot of foreign criminal activity has been noted by the Thais, especially by Thai law enforcement. There are efforts being stepped up to combat it, so again I don't think that this trend is going to be one that lasts a particularly long time. But that being said it is rather interesting and poignant in the moment, and we will certainly be keeping folks updated on this channel as the situation in evolves.
